Stable Fund & MakerDAO + Gitcoin: EF Infrastructure Bounties

This has now been completed! Thus far, issues have been solved across the Solidity, web3py, Casper FFG, and ETH Utils repo’s as a result of the MakerDAO contribution. Let’s dive into the key results and pending issues.

Solidity (5 Issues Completed; 1,060 Dai Allocated)

Solidity is a contract-oriented, high-level language for implementing smart contracts. It was influenced by C++, Python and JavaScript and is designed to target the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM).

In one issue, Jonny Burger, helped Truffle founder Tim Coulter with a unique issue when upgrading Truffle to Solidity 0.4.11.

Alongside the 5 issues completed, there are 5 more issues in progress via Gitcoin bounties.

Web3Py (1 Issue Completed; 100 Dai Allocated)

Web3.py is a python library for interacting with Ethereum. Its API is derived from the Web3.js Javascript API and should be familiar to anyone who has used web3.js.

Piper worked with @mikery, who was paid out 100 Dai for providing better error messaging around ABI’s.

Casper FFG (1 Issue Completed; 720 Dai Allocated)

Danny Ryan and team are working on the Ethereum implementation of Casper FFG (the Friendly Finality Gadget), a Proof-of-Stake finality protocol that can be layered on any block proposal mechanism.

In one issue worth 140 Dai, @paulhaner ensured that validators had a backup for making withdrawals from the staking pool.

In a few hairier issues, Alex Stokes has been helping migrate the purity checker from the deprecated Serpent library. While at the final stages, there has been a phenomenal amount of thinking into doing this appropriately.

Casper FFG is a stated priority of the Ethereum ecosystem as a whole and we’re proud to have supported the seeds of this project!

Eth-Utils (1 issue completed; 75 Dai Allocated)

Eth-Utils houses common utility functions for codebases which interact with Ethereum. Piper Merriam requested one issue regarding this and serial bounty hunter @dilatebrave took down the 75 Dai for completing it in a day.

He’s done work on Raiden, cpp-ethereum, Bounties Network, and Gitcoin itself in the past.

Conclusions & Next Steps

The 2,000 Dai allocated towards the Ethereum infrastructure layer has turned out to be a great start for the MakerDAO + Gitcoin partnership. With a humble initial amount of Dai, we’ve helped solve issues across a variety of important repo’s and while providing a stable option of payment to Gitcoin bounty hunters.

We’re excited to continue posting future bounties across repositories and telling the stories of the individuals who work to move the ecosystem forward.
